16/365: “3AM” by Matchbox Twenty
Every music fan goes through a transition at some point in their life. For most, I imagine it happens between the ages of 8-14 but at some point we all start listening to music that our parents did not introduce us to. Matchbox Twenty was one of my first non-parentally induced music experiences. Once I discovered the radio, I was forever changed. In 5th grade, a friend and I sang Matchbox Twenty’s “Real World” together at a talent(ish) show thing. Radio-friendly late 90s/early 2000s rock was awful and wonderful and awful and I’ll understand anyone who judges me for this but dammit I still remember every word from Yourself or Someone Like You.
