#40. “It’s You” – Duck Sauce
The debut album from Armand Van Helden and A-Track’s delightful Duck Sauce project is filled with upbeat smile inducing jams but none are more effortlessly enjoyable that “It’s You”. Read my review of Duck Sauce’s debut album Quack here.
#39. “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone) – U2
U2 may not be what they used to be but they haven’t totally lost their mojo either. While plenty of people were downright angry that U2 dared to give them a free album, I was overjoyed. Songs of Innocence is no masterpiece but “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)” is a worthy entry into their impressive catalogue of singles. Read my review of U2’s Songs of Innocence right here.
#38. “Gimme Something Good” – Ryan Adams
The mad sad scientist of alt-country returned with a superb self titled album and “Gimme Something Good” is a fine example of Ryan Adams doing what he does best: moody, gritty, good ol’ fashioned American guitar music.
#37. “Howling at the Moon” – Phantogram
Phantogram never sleeps. They’ve been touring and recording constantly since 2009 and even though their sophomore album Voices didn’t take over the world quite like I expected, this song proved to have some serious staying power throughout the year. Read my review of Voices right here.
#36. “A Sky Full of Stars” – Coldplay
You couldn’t really escape this song in 2014 but truth be told I didn’t really want to. Its a big joyous celebration that sounds more like a Calvin Harris track than something from the guys who made A Rush of Blood to the Head but I won’t hold it against them. I like nice music and this song is pretty nice.
#35. “Go” – Grimes ft. Blood Diamonds
Allegedly written for Rihanna, “Go” is an aggressive electronic banger with some serious teeth. Though a definite departure from her existing sound, “Go” is an exciting teaser that shows the sonic range of one of electronic music’s most interesting artists.
#34. “Trainwreck 1979” – Death From Above 1979
Don’t call it a comeback. Seriously, it wasn’t much of a comeback. Death From Above 1979 releases their second album ten years after their first and surprise, surprise, it can’t live up to the hype. The Physical World isn’t a bad album but I think I prefer the mythology of the one and done artist. That said, “Trainwreck 1979” sounds like old school DFA 1979 and I can honestly say its the best song they’ve released in years.
#33. “Carry Me” – Bombay Bicycle Club
This weird synth hook will stay with you. That’s sort of not an option. But its the rest of the song that really shows off the songwriting expertise of Bombay Bicycle Club.
#32. “FUNKNROLL” – Prince
Ok, you can call this one a comeback. Magnificently strange and utterly irresistible, Prince’s war on lower case letters continues with his latest masterpiece “FUNKNROLL”. I wrote so much about Prince this year. Check out my series titled Why I Like Prince and U Should 2 right here.
#31. “Blue Moon” – Beck
I’d call this one a comeback too. Beck gets back to his acoustic roots with his latest album Morning Phase. Though sleepy at times, Beck is a seriously skilled song writer and there more than a couple really great tracks on his latest album but “Blue Moon” is definitely my favorite of the bunch.
