Why I Like Prince and U Should 2 Part 2: That Time Prince Destroyed Tom Petty, Steve Winwood and Jeff Lynne on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”

The year is 2004. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has just inducted Bob Seger, George Harrison, ZZ Top, Jackson Browne, Traffic, the late George Harrison and of course, Prince.

An All-Star collection of aging guitar heroes pay tribute to George Harrison with a loyal rendition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. There are 4 visible guitarists on stage at the start. Pay no attention to the shadowy figure on the right end of the stage. Tom Petty, Steve Winwood (Blind Faith, Traffic), and Jeff Lynne (ELO) and do their thing and it’s real nice. A fine tribute to a fine guitarist. This goes on for 3 minutes and 28 seconds.

Enter The Purple One.

Prince enters with his little red cowboy hat and starts melting faces. The dude just goes off. I’m pretty sure his solo was supposed to last for like 30 seconds but he just keeps going until the song ends. It’s nuts. And then at then when the song ends, he just takes his guitar off and throws it straight up into the air and WE NEVER SEE IT COME DOWN.

I just hope that guitar is still floating around somewhere in space, watching over us all.
